Our new partner: Mander Portman Woodward

In 2025 Tutor Japan began a new partnership with Mander Portman Woodward (MPW), a UK Independent School. Students can join MPW to study for the GCSE and A-Levels full-time, join a Foundation Program before entering university, or get a taste of studying in the UK through MPW’s Summer School.

Who is MPW?

Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) was founded by three Cambridge University graduates in 1973 is one of the UK’s leading independent schools, and provides fifth and sixth-form education. MPW has three locations within the UK, that are near leading universities in London, Birmingham, and Cambridge. At all three campus locations, students can complete their GCSE and A-Level education from a broad range of over 25-40 subjects. Additionally MPW is skilled at supporting students who wish to apply to Oxford and Cambridge universities and Medical School through free additional OxBridge Preparation Programs and Medical School Preparation Programs. Students can join these programs alongside their Fifth and Sixth Form education at MPW to help enhance their knowledge and strengthen their UCAS application.

MPW offers a Pre-Program designed for students who require Pre-Sessional English support prior to their main course of study. Moreover, MPW offers programs that lead to the UK’s top universities, through three Foundation Programs: NCUK Foundation, MPW University Foundation and the University of the Arts London Art Foundation.

All classes are taught in small, OxBridge-style groups with a strong focus on exam preparation, discussion-based learning, and extensive support throughout the university application process. Each student is assigned with a personal tutor to help with their studies and to help them settle into UK life by meeting with students weekly.

MPW Highlights

  • ・In the past 5 years, 172 students from MPW were admitted to study medicine, dentistry and veterinary science at university.
  • ・In the past 5 years, 16 students successfully entered OxBridge universities.
  • ・Consistently outstanding results from students leads to around a 70% progression to Russel Group or University of London every year.
  • ・Classes are lead by highly qualified teachers, many of whom also work for GCSE or A-Level exam boards. One third of teachers has a PhD background.
  • ・Students are tested rigorously every 1 -2 weeks to ensure they thoroughly understand the subjects.
  • ・Approximately 25% of MPW students progress each year to universities from the Times Top 10 Universities list.

MPW Summer School

MPW offers an academic Summer School for 2 weeks, held in London or Cambridge. The program schedule includes skills workshops, enrichment activities, and social events. Students choose an area of interest from 8 subjects to discover future careers they might be interested in. The program also equips students with essential skills such as public speaking and critical thinking, which they will use their entire careers.

The graph displays the 8 subject areas offered at MPW’s Summer School. Except for 2 subjects – Art & Design and Architecture – subjects can be studied at either the London or Cambridge locations.

Students can take advantage of the central locations of London and Cambridge, and enjoy a packed schedule of social and cultural activities outside the classroom. Students also embark on a day trip during their time to visit other nearby cities. Furthermore, leading academics in respective academic fields deliver lectures and career talks to students. Students at MPW Summer School enhance their reading, listening, writing, and comprehension skills while also practicing their English in natural everyday situations.

Accommodation

In London, students will stay at the newly refurbished Queen’s Gate House. This outstanding facility
provides stylish premium en-suite bedrooms that offer panoramic views across South Kensington. Each room has air-conditioning, which is a unique feature in London. This accommodation forms part of MPW’s campus and is located just a few minutes’ walk from the main college building.

In Cambridge, students will stay at Tripos Court, which provides comfortable, secure accommodation with premium en-suite bedrooms and beautiful gardens, perfect for socialising on sunny days. The accommodation is a 15-minute walk to the college. Students will be chaperoned to and from school as a group each day.
